Kemi is located by the Baltic Sea in the Gulf of Botnia. It is the town of the well known SnowCastle, where most of our activities will start towards the sea.
Kemi has a population of 21758 inhabitants and it has been the centre of trade and services of Sea Lapland since its foundation in 1869 by the Russian Emperor Alexander II, because of its proximity to a deep water harbour. From that harbour leaves nowadays big cargoships which in winter time are escorted by huge icebreakers opening their way throughout the frozen sea towards the open waters in the south. With no doubt, the sea is the main character of this town, and most of the activities that we arrange will take place around it. The connection to Kemi is comfortable. There are direct flights between Helsinki and Kemi, and there is also a railway connection.
Activities and Safaris
Kemi is a perfect destination to combine with Rovaniemi whatever your reason for travelling.Their local attractions, such as the Sampo ice-breaker, the SnowCastle and the Sea, offer unique experiences and safaris that makes Kemi a popular choice for individuals, groups and corporate travel. In Kemi, when the winter comes, we will speed our snowmobiles across the frozen sea, and we might also try our luck with ice-fishing. For those who want to experince something totally different, we offer a ride in the Olokolo sleighs which take us warmly and comfortably through the sea with a good chance to see animals as Sea Eagles, Elks and others. What about an adventure in one of the islands near Kemi? Or perhaps you would like a guided visit to the SnowCastle and show the others your art skills in our Ice & Snow Carving program for beginners.
