Luosto is a small village about 110 km North from Rovaniemi. Luosto has a population of approximately 200 inhabitants in winter time and 73 in summer. It is located in the heart of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, which covers 145 km². This area had mountains as big as the Alps 2 billion years ago. Nowadays the highest peak is the Noitatunturi, at 540m high. Some of the pines in the area are 200 year-old or even older.
The Amethyst mine, located in the hill of Lampivaara, is one of the main attractions in Luosto. Climbing the hill will offer you some of the most amazing views in Lapland, over the immense forest and fells. In the Amethyst mine visitors get an introduction about this mineral and they all have the chance to dig for their own lucky stone.
Activities and Safaris

With Rovaniemi nearby, it is also possible to combine a visit to Santa Claus Village or the Rovaniemi city itself. In Luosto you will be able to enjoy memorable experiences and safaris in pure untouched surroundings. Drive your own snowmobile, become a real musher riding your own husky sledge, or feel like a Sámi riding your own reindeer pulled sledge, just like in the old days! Snowshoe excursions in the beautiful National Park are also highly recommended.
